Case 8: Introduction

You are seeing a 78 yr old man with recently diagnosed oropharyngeal cancer. He reports several weeks of dysphagia and is only able to eat soft solids or liquids.

He leads an active lifestyle  and has lost 10 pounds over the past 4 weeks, though there have been no changes to his exercise routine.

He underwent a 3 day calorie count and his average oral intake was 1050 kcals and 40 gm of protein per day.

The patient is scheduled to undergo 6 cycles of chemotherapy and several weeks of radiation to the tumor.

His oncologist has referred him to you for placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG) tube.
