A 45 yr old man who has been in an MVA, is admitted to the surgical ICU with polytrauma. He undergoes a splenectomy and distal pancreatectomy, as well as ORIF of a femoral fracture. He then develops severe sepsis and shock due to ventilator associated PNA . He is now day # 5 of admission and has been weaned off vasopressor support.
He has not had a bowel movement since admission, and the RN checked gastric residual volumes(GRV) which were 300cc over the past day.
